The full moon burned bright above the scattered islands, a silver eye watching in the midnight sky. It lit a path across the dark water, drawing Aura toward the Highlands. She had spent her life wandering the outer shores, surviving on instinct and driven by curiosity. Her restless spirit was leading her on this adventure, and she always followed her heart.
She paddled the makeshift raft she had built from driftwood and canopy vines all the way from the Outer Islands. The journey took longer than she thought it would, and she was already growing tired. The sea grew rougher, and the waves nearly swallowed her whole. She had traveled the sea alone before, but only from island to island; she had never voyaged to the Highlands. That just wasn’t a place most went to. It was only known for cliffs and fairy tales.
Finally reaching the base of the tallest limestone pillar, she secured her little craft to the rocks and jumped to the lowest ledge of the cliff. As she started to climb, a heavy wave slammed against it, crushing it to bits. Pieces of the wreckage spun in the white foam as they were swept out to sea. Aura’s ears flattened as she watched the last sliver of driftwood disappear. There was no going back now, only up.
Digging her claws into the narrow crevices, she pulled herself up the cliffside as the salty sea spray stung her eyes. One slip, one wrong move, and she would plunge straight down into the churning waters. The coastal wind howled like an angry spirit as she clung to the rough limestone. Inching upward along the cliff face, loose rock crumbled beneath her feet and tumbled toward the darkness. Her heart pounded as her claws hooked deeper into the stone. Reaching up, she hauled herself onto a ledge and collapsed against the damp rock.
Most creatures would have stayed in the safety of the lowlands. But Aura wasn’t most creatures.
As she rested for a moment, her memory drifted back to when she was a youngling. Closing her eyes, she could still feel the warmth of the sand against her fur as she curled up beside the crackling fire, listening to the elders tell fantastic tales.
They spoke of the legend of Moon Path Keep—a radiant fortress hidden atop the Highland peaks. They spoke of guardians who wielded stardust and ruled the sky. They spoke of the sacred Lumawilo Tree, whose silver roots sent pulses of starlight throughout the islands. The sanctuary was said to be a citadel in the clouds, created to protect the tree’s life force.
They claimed an invisible wall of energy would vaporize anyone who dared to enter.
“If you go looking for the Keep, even the sky itself will turn against you,” an elder warned, twitching their whiskers as they poked the fire, sending a shower of sparks into the dark. “The stronghold guards the light, little ones, and it does not welcome uninvited guests.”
Those who went searching for it vanished, never to be seen again.
To most, the stories were just scary myths told around the campfire to keep younglings from straying too close to the cliffs. But to Aura, they were more than myths; she had listened to them her whole life, and she had never forgotten them. For as long as she could remember, she had watched the clouds, searching for a flicker of neon or a ripple in the mist that wasn’t supposed to be there.
She needed to know the truth. And tonight, she wasn’t turning back until she found it.
This is just the beginning of Aura’s journey...
